Sam is a 6 year old Shih-Tzu who arrived in our care through no fault of his own.
Sam has sadly been through a lot of unrest and change in his life through when he first arrived, he initially struggled to settle and found it difficult to trust some of his new carers.
However, after a lot of gentle reassurance and allowing him to come around in his own time, Sam has shown to be a wonderful boy.
He enjoys selected affection, going on gentle strolls with his new volunteer friends and snoozing the day away.
Sam would be best suited to a quiet, adult only home with people who have good Shih-Tzu knowledge or experience. His new owners will need to be patient and understanding, allowing him to transition into his new life at his own pace.
When Sam arrived, his coat was completely matted which resulted in him needing to be completely shaved off by our resident groomer. This was quite a traumatic experience for him as he was in such poor condition and in a lot of discomfort caused by years of matting amd neglect. However, now that his coat is growung back nicely, he is such a handsome looking gentleman.
This being the case, his new owners will also need to be fully committed to his regular grooming and maintenance routine to ensure that he is kept happy and healthy.
Sam can sometimes be sensitive to touch especially unexpectedly by unfamiliar people therefore, any new interactions or handling will need to be slow, gradual and made to be a positive experience for him through using positive reward based training methods to build his trust and confidence.
Sam communicates his feelings well through his body language and responses when he feels unsure or uncomfortable around a person or a new experience therefore, his new owners will need to be aware of this, learn these signals and respect them.
Once settled in and confident in his new home, Sam will make someone a lovely companion. He doesn’t ask for much apart from a comfortable, relaxed lifestyle with people who will adore him.
Sam will take time to adjust and a simple life will suit him best. He doesn’t appreciate a coat or harness and is happy walking on a collar and lead.
He doesn’t care about the rain, he will not tolerant being dried yet so popping him a warm room/area to dry naturally is what we advise. He will happily sit on a towel on his bed and eat a chew. Again leaving him in piece to eat his chew quietly.
The trauma he has been through will affect his recovery time, months of rehabilitation will be needed for him.
Baby steps are the way forward.
Sam deserves a life filled with comfort and love.
He did go home temporary, unfortunately this did not work out based on sams behaviour.
Can you give him a chance to become a member of the good boys club!
