If you find a dog

What to do if you find a dog

If you find a dog that is out on it’s own check to see if the dog is wearing a collar and an identification disc. You are legally obliged to contact th local authority and for the Cardiff area it will be Cardiff Dogs’ Home. We will arrange for a Warden to come to collect the dog and scan for a microchip to reunite it with the owner. If there is no microchip the dog will be taken to Cardiff Dogs Home.

If you find a dog outside the Cardiff area please contact your local authority:

The Dog Warden Service is available between 08.30  and 17.00 Monday to Thursday and 08.30 to 16.30 Friday. There is no Warden Service Saturday or Sunday or bank holidays.

The Dogs Home is staffed 24 hours a day and is open to take in stray dogs at any time. It is helpful if you ring us first and advise the staff you are bringing a dog in.

You can also take the dog to a vet where they can scan for a microchip but please note that the vet is not allowed to give you any information about the owner and will keep the dog and report it to the Warden Service.

If you are interested in re-homing a dog you have found you will need to go through the normal application and matching process.

Complete the online form below or call us on 029 2071 1243

We will check if the owner has reported it missing. If they have, then we will try to reunite the dog with its owner, without the dog having to come into the home. If the dog has not been reported missing, the Dog Warden will come and collect the dog from you during office hours. You can also bring a stray dog straight to us at the dogs’ home at any time. We have 24hour cover for receiving stray dogs. If possible, please contact us before bringing in a dog outside our normal working hours.

Please be very careful about posting details on social media. While it is very useful and can help you to find an owner, you may encounter people falsely claiming to own a dog that you have found. Please only put the minimum amount of information out there. If someone has genuinely lost that dog they will know all the details about the colour, size, breed and the area in which the dog was lost.
