Rufio
Rufio is a tiny Yorkshire Terrier, just one year old, who found himself in our care through no fault of his own due to a change in his previous owners’ circumstances. He’s come from a loving home, and it’s clear he once had a very comfortable life — which has made this transition especially confusing for him.
When Rufio first arrived, he was a little lost and unsure, trying to understand why his world had suddenly changed. With time, patience, and kindness, he has begun to settle, showing us what a sweet and gentle little soul he truly is.
He recently had a spa day with our groomer, helping him feel more comfortable and confident — and letting him see the world more clearly again, both physically and emotionally.
Rufio can feel anxious about having his lead put on or taken off, and he is particularly sensitive about his neck being touched. This is something he’s been working on with our behaviour team using kind, force-free methods. He’s trying his best, but he will need a patient, understanding home willing to continue helping him feel safe.
Once his lead is on, his true spirit shines. He loves going out exploring, happily trotting along and walking further than you’d expect for such a small boy. He’d adore a home that can take him on little adventures and let him experience the world at his own pace.
Rufio is affectionate in his own quiet way, but he also likes to make his own choices — a little independent, a little sensitive, and very endearing. He has a playful side and enjoys running, chasing, and tossing his small squeaky toys into the air, carrying them around like treasured possessions.
He generally walks past other dogs calmly and handles everyday life well, though loud traffic — especially large lorries — can frighten him. A gentle voice and reassurance go a long way in helping him feel safe again.
Because of his anxiety around neck handling, Rufio would be best suited to a home with older children aged 16+ who can respect his boundaries. He may also be able to live with other neutered dogs or cats, following careful introductions at the centre.
Rufio doesn’t just need home, he needs someone who will understand his fears, celebrate his progress, and show him that he will never be abandoned again.
