Rufio came into our care due to a change in circumstances with his previous owner. Once he had time to settle, we were able to see who he truly is — and he is actually a fun-loving little fellow with a big personality. He can be worried in certain situations, particularly around touch, but underneath that sensitivity is a bright and affectionate boy.
Rufio did briefly find a home, but sadly it wasn’t meant to be. He struggled to bond with the resident dog and with the male human in the home, and felt overwhelmed by the sudden change in environment and routine. It was simply too much, too soon. The experience showed us that Rufio needs a slower, more understanding introduction to home life.
He recently enjoyed a gentle spa day with our experienced groomer, who took her time and respected his boundaries throughout. Nothing is rushed here — dogs are never pushed beyond their comfort zones. The session helped Rufio feel more comfortable, more confident, and able to see the world clearly again — both physically and emotionally.
Rufio can feel anxious about having his lead put on or removed, and he is particularly sensitive about his neck being touched or being over-handled. Our behaviour team has been working with him using kind, force-free methods, and he is trying his absolute best. He will need a patient, understanding home willing to continue this positive work and allow him to build trust at his own pace.
Once his lead is on, his true spirit shines. He loves heading out on adventures, happily trotting along and often walking further than you’d expect for such a small chap. He is confident meeting and socialising with other dogs on walks, showing that while he may need calm introductions at home, he enjoys canine friends outside. He would adore a home that can offer gentle explorations and let him experience the world without pressure.
Rufio has made many friends while in our care — both male and female staff and volunteers — showing that with time and consistency, he absolutely can form lovely bonds. He jumps high for affection, loves a fuss, and when he’s zooming around or climbing over his carers, he completely forgets he’s supposed to be a “worried man.”
He has a playful side too, enjoying running, chasing, and tossing his small squeaky toys into the air before proudly carrying them around like prized possessions.
On walks, he generally passes other dogs calmly and manages everyday life well. Loud traffic, especially large lorries, can frighten him, but a calm voice and gentle reassurance help him regain his confidence.
Due to his sensitivity around neck handling and his need for clear, consistent boundaries, Rufio is looking for an adult-only, dog-free home with someone experienced in the Yorkshire Terrier breed who understands that trust is earned gently.
He will need time to settle and build confidence, and while he currently requires a dog-free home, with continued training and support he may one day be able to share his space with his own canine best friend.
Rufio doesn’t just need a home — he needs someone who will understand his fears, celebrate every bit of progress, and promise him that he will never be abandoned again.
