Our longest waiting resident – Helga

Helga is now 8 years old and has been patiently waiting far too long for the loving forever home she deserves.

Helga has some orthopaedic changes in her hind legs, but they certainly don’t define her. She is comfortable on daily pain relief, enjoys a good quality of life and is looking for a family who will continue to support her ongoing care.

Since moving into her wonderful foster home, Helga has completely blossomed. With patience, understanding and consistency, her foster carer has helped her grow into the amazing little dog she is today. She has discovered the comfort of a loving home, enjoys a familiar routine and has become so much more confident in herself.

Once Helga trusts you, her true personality shines. She’s affectionate, hilarious and full of character. She loves nothing more than curling up for a cuddle (or a cwtch, as we like to say), playing with her toys, enjoying enrichment games around the home and snoozing in the garden.

Unlike many dogs, Helga doesn’t live for walks. The outside world can still be overwhelming for her, so long or busy walks aren’t her idea of fun. She would much rather have a couple of secure field sessions each week to let off steam, alongside daily games and enrichment at home. When she does go for walks, quiet routes at quieter times of the day suit her perfectly.

Helga has been working incredibly hard on her dog social skills and has even made a little canine friend. They are slowly building a lovely friendship at Helga’s own pace, which has been wonderful to see. She is clever, food motivated and eager to learn. She is non-reactive to traffic, cyclists and people, and settles brilliantly when left home alone for periods of time.

Helga is searching for a quiet, adult only home where she can continue to build her confidence and feel safe. She could potentially live with a very calm, neutered male dog of a similar size, but her new family would need to be patient and fully committed to continuing her progress. Multiple introductions over time would be essential to allow Helga to build a positive relationship at her own pace, and any potential adopters would need to live close enough to the centre to commit to this process.

After waiting longer than any other dog in our care, we would love nothing more than to see Helga finally find her happy ending. She has come such a long way in foster, and now all she needs is a family to see just how special she truly is.
