Meet Copper!
Copper is a handsome, leggy, blonde wire-haired Lurcher who arrived in our care as a stray. When he first came in, he was suffering with some skin issues and is currently receiving veterinary treatment alongside weekly baths. We are pleased to say he is already looking much better and is well on the road to recovery.
Copper is a very sweet-natured boy who loves human company and will happily lean in for a cuddle whenever the opportunity arises. He has settled in well, is enjoying his walks and has been busy making new friends along the way.
As you would expect from a Lurcher, Copper enjoys stretching his legs and having the occasional zoom around. He walks nicely on the lead for much of the time, although he can become strong when he catches an interesting scent and follows his nose. He has shown a slight prey drive, which is typical of the breed, and this should be considered by potential adopters.
We feel Copper could potentially live with sensible children who are comfortable around larger dogs, as well as other neutered dogs following successful introductions at the centre.
Due to his difficult past and likely uncertainty around where his next meal would come from, Copper has shown some low-level guarding behaviours around his food bowl. We feel this is something that can be managed successfully within the right home and improved further with ongoing guidance. Simple management techniques, such as feeding him in a quiet separate area where he can eat undisturbed, alongside advice from our Behaviour Team, will help him continue to build confidence around food. As this behaviour is currently low-level, we feel it can be managed easily with understanding and consistency.
Copper would benefit from a home with people who understand large breed sighthounds and their needs. Ongoing training, including loose lead walking and breed-appropriate activities, would help him continue to thrive. His wire coat will also require regular maintenance to keep him looking and feeling his best.
If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate companion with long legs, a big heart and plenty of love to give, Copper could be the boy for you.
